The Academy Awards air on February 26, 2017, and are going to make lots of actors and actresses awfully proud of the work that they’ve done. On the note of movies, it’s time to talk about some of the movies that are the best of their particular subject. One of the most interesting types of movies are the ones that are about the lives of famous musicians. There are different movies out there that have been made to share the lives of musicians.
From Ray Charles to Johnny Cash, there are a variety of different movies about musicians. Some have passed away and others are still alive, but there’s something about the life of a musician that is especially entertaining to watch and learn about. From learning about their early childhood to seeing how they got so famous, the lives of musicians are particularly interesting, especially if you’ve been impacted by their music. That’s why it’s time to discuss the best movie about the lives of musicians.
Keep in mind that this isn’t counting documentaries, but includes movies that portray the life of the musician.
3 Best Movies on the Lives of Musicians
Walk the Line
One of my favorite movies is Walk the Line. If it was on Netflix I would probably watch it a lot more often, but it does come on AMC every now and again. It’s about the life of Johnny Cash, whose most popular hits included “Walk the Line” and “Ring of Fire.”
Cash spent some time serving in the Air Force in Germany before he pursued a career in musician, toured with Elvis, and even recorded his song “Folsom Prison Blues,” at Folsom Prison in Folsom, California. There are a lot of reasons to love Johnny Cash, but Walk the Line does a great job of taking the viewer through some of the darker chapters of his life as well. Cash had a tumultuous career, wrought with drug addiction and a rough family life.
Walk the Line is one of the best movies out there about musicians.
8 Mile follows the life of Marshall Mathers, who is better known by his stage name, Eminem. Growing up in Detroit, and had a rough go at life. The movie follows some of the stress the rapper faced through struggles in his relationship with his mother, girlfriend, and eventually his daughter.
But his story also follows Mathers’s perseverance as he fights to beat the odds, which are stacked against him as he tries to pursue his dream of becoming a hip-hop artist. As the viewer knows, Eminem will one day reach stardom, so the story must turn out good.
Unlike the other two movies on the list, Eminem is still alive, and starred in the movie himself, doing surprisingly well as an actor.
Ray is my all-time favorite movie about the life of a musician. Ray Charles is one of the godfathers of soul and gospel music, and the movie does an extraordinary job of following him in his story. It’s a particularly emotional ride, as Ray grew up in absolute poverty and found himself, his piano skills, and his voice led to him being one of the most influential musicians of all time. Jamie Foxx does a magnificent job of playing Ray Charles in the film.
There are a lot of other movies about musicians, but these three do a fantastic job of following the lives of the men in an almost documentary-like way. Although some artistic license is taken, they still accurately follow the true story of each of these great musicians.
